On the 26th April Hamilton Grammar hosted it’s first World of Work Event for all S3 pupils. A number of contributors visited the school and set up stalls for pupils to visit and learn more about their chosen careers. The main objective of the event was to heighten the profile of apprenticeships and on- the- job training and all of the contributors on the day were able to provide an insight in to the vast range of career pathways available to pupils. Attending on the day were representatives from Jacobs, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Aldi, RAF, Army, RBS, New Age Fitness, Arnold Clark, Kwik- Fit, Brakes and The Tennent’s Training Academy. Feedback from pupils was positive with them gaining some inspiration for their future careers.
Following on from the post about the Scottish Apprenticeship Showcase at South Lanarkshire College in March, it is with great pleasure to announce that Kayla Findlay of S4 won The Carpentry Challenge. She was the fastest pupil on the day to successfully insert a number of screws into a board in 30 seconds. This event was sponsored by Mears Scotland Ltd and Kayla is seen here being presented with her Kindle Fire by Margaret Evans from CiTB. Congratulations Kayla!
We’d like to extend a huge congratulations to our Young Enterprise team Handmade Hamilton for their success at the Lanarkshire Young Enterprise finals on Thursday.
Miss Burrell and her team have been working tirelessly throughout the year selling their handmade pens & custom tote bags. At the finals on Thursday they walked away with the Marketing Award and for the first time ever brought the Company of the Year shield back to Hamilton Grammar.
Tuesday 21st March was World Down’s Syndrome Awareness Day and our pupils showed their support by wearing funky socks to school, raising just short of £200. Thanks to all who took part!
To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week (6th to 10th March) some of our S3 and S4 pupils attended South Lanarkshire College’s Apprenticeship Showcase. This was an opportunity for pupils to meet with training providers and try their hands at various different trades. This included pupils gaining experience of brick laying, carpentry, hair dressing, painting and decorating to name a few. Feedback from pupils was extremely positive and this event has encouraged pupils to pursue careers within these industries
Our Easter School Programme is running on Monday 3rd, Tuesday 4th, Wednesday 12th & Thursday 13th of April between 9am and 3:30pm.
Information regarding subjects and levels on offer will be made available over the next 2 weeks on our Easter School page. Pupils will be required to sign up for each session using forms similar to Friday Study School.
At the end of February, Hamilton Grammar School hosted a Business Breakfast. This was an opportunity for the school to celebrate the links they already have with employers and create and nurture new ones. The event was also a chance for employers to come into the school and speak with young people and share their experiences of education and their personal journey to their chosen occupation. Feedback from the event was extremely positive, with employers committing to getting involved in various other activities such as mock interviews, providing work experience placements and an apprenticeship event. Pupils enjoyed sharing their experiences with employers and gained worthwhile advice on how to successfully achieve their career goals. A massive thanks to the 28 businesses that attended the event, including New Age Fitness, Colonel Mustard In The Courthouse, Elspeth Hamilton Perfumery (representing Hamilton BID), George Taylor & Co, BCF Technology, Aldi, theSKYLAB and Slater, Hogg and Howison – to name a few.
